Group Explorer Classroom Resources

Abstract algebra instructors wanting to use Group Explorer in lecture will find resources here to help.

In a computer lab setting

Brad Emmons introduced Group Explorer to his students in a computer lab and had investigations planned for them to do that first day.  Brad has contributed the PDF he used in class for anyone to download.  This is a good place to start when designing an introductory lab experience using Group Explorer.

Nathan Carter introduced Group Explorer to a group of abstract algebra students who had just learned the definition of a group the day before.  The introduction was done in a computer lab and contains portions where the students interact with the software.  That lesson's outline is another useful example, and it can be downloaded here.

In a standard classroom

The Getting Started Tutorial from this web site is not intended only for an individual sitting in front of a PC alone.  It can also be followed as an outline for introducing an audience to the software.

Nathan also gave a talk to a more advanced abstract algebra class who had seem a good deal of group theory already.  This talk only requires the speaker to have a computer and projector.  A PDF outline of the talk can be downloaded here.

Several of the Mathematical Investigations Using Group Explorer on the Tutorials page are extremely well suited to a classroom lecture.

In Portuguese!

Humberto Bortolossi gave a presentation to the Brazilian Mathematical Society on Group Explorer. I don't speak Portuguese, but the look of the document seems like he did a lot of good prep work. If you speak Portuguese, this intro is for you! His PDF can be downloaded here.

Student Presentations

Instructors are also encouraged to refer to the Homework Assignments page, which contains a section regarding in-class presentations which students could be assigned to do.
