Visual Group Theory Podcast
I'm starting a video podcast to teach the basics of group theory visualization. It will be a useful supplement to the textbook and to Group Explorer. So far there is just one episode, an introduction. These things take awhile to get right! Expect more episodes in the future, but not necessarily close together!
Note that if your computer doesn't play these files (which are in .MOV format) you may need to install QuickTime. After clicking a link, be patient while it loads.
Podcast 1: Introduction
Topic: What is group theory, and what is the purpose of this podcast?
Podcast 2: Symmetry
Visual Group Theory talks
I've also given some visual talks on group theory, with animated slides, etc., that can provide a good overview.
A Talk Without Words, from the Joint Math Meetings, January 7, 2008
View/download (about 17 min, 18MB, 320x240)
This talk assumes that the viewer already knows group theory, but not how to visualize it, and gives an introduction to visualization. (The podcast, above, assumes nothing.)
Visualizing Group Theory, from the MathFest, August 6, 2009
View/download (about 14 min, 18MB, 320x240)
This talk also assumes the viewer knows group theory, and instead of giving an introduction to visualization, covers one selected advanced topic (semidirect products) from a visual perspective. It has some overlap with the talk immediately above, but not much.
